Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the nation's premier integrated communications service provider announced the launching of the Asia Pacific I – Root Server at its Corporate Customer Forum, held on October 15. SLT takes great pride in being selected as the host for the I-Root server in Sri Lanka. It is a reflection of the expertise available within the company and the state of the art Data Centre (SLTiDC) infrastructure and unparalleled internet connectivity wich has helped to make it a success. Root server installation is set to further facilitate the increase in the performance of the DNS server systems in Sri Lanka and around. This root server is connected to all ISPs in Sri Lanka which are connected via SLT internet Exchange (SLTIX) strengthening its commitment to further enhance the country’s internet infrastructure. SLTnet, the internet arm of SLT recently announced its international internet backbone upgrade to 3 Giga bits per second (Gbps) today, facilitating Sri Lankan internet users to experience high quality and super fast internet service.
Commenting on the latest development, Mr. Tilak De Silva, Chief Global and Networks Officer of Sri Lanka Telecom said, “Being the premier telecommunications service provider in the country, we would like to welcome all the local ISPs, business customers and all internet users in the country to experience the enhancement. Also ISPs in Sri Lanka are privileged to obtain their root domain name resolution process locally. SLT is continuously looking forward to enhance the quality of all the services and the deployment of the root server in Sri Lanka. I believe this initiative, enables the objective of internet services for all users in Sri Lanka to improve their internet experience.
Mr. Champika Wijeyatunga, a Senior Trainer at APNIC made the key note presentation at the forum. He has extensive experience in technical training and the development of regular tutorials for the Asia Pacific region on topics related to Internet Resource Management, Domain Name Systems and Internet Security.
Speaking at the forum, Mr.Wijeyatunga explained the dynamics of root servers as well as its strategic benefits, saying, “The launching of the I Root server, which is the first root server to be deployed in Sri Lanka will bring significant improvements in both speed and reliability to Internet users in Sri Lanka and the surrounding region.. This is specially so in terms of faster domain resolution, increased resilience, the speed in which one can access information as well as the enhancement of the internet.”
The agreement entails the further strengthening of the Domain Name System (DNS) through the deployment of additional resources that will handle the growing Internet traffic, in addition to the dispersing of malicious traffic directed at root servers. Another benefit is the further boosting of security in organizations.
Root servers are a critical part of the Internet’s DNS, providing information about authoritative servers for Top Level Domains (TLDs). Computers need these information in order to interpret URLs, email addresses, in addition to the performance of other types of Internet transactions.
Commenting on the deployment of the mirror of I-Root server in Sri Lanka, the Program Director and Legal Advisor of the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), Jayantha Fernando, stated that “ICTA wishes to congratulate and commend all parties involved in the launch of the mirror of I-Root server in Sri Lanka, particularly Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) for taking on the challenging task of hosting the I Root server. ICTA also congratulates Netnod Autonomica, the operator of I-Root server, for partnering with SLT in this landmark achievement, and very specially APNIC for providing the technical guidance and support through the process. The establishment of a mirror of the I-Root server would help Sri Lanka to be better connected to the Internet with faster and easier access”.
