A team of experts from UTStarcom, a global leader in Internet Protocol based networks and telecommunications solutions, visited Colombo recently to promote its products.

UTStarcom and local partner Just In Time Holdings have already introduced the latest in Internet Protocol based entertainment technology, IPTV, to Sri Lanka in an agreement with Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). IPTV was introduced to the country in September this year by SLT, under the brand name of ‘PEO TV,’ according to a company statement.

IPTV technology can be used to personalise the TV experience through facilities like Video on Demand, that allows viewers to select what they want to watch, and Time Shifted TV, that allows viewers to watch their favourite programmes later, if they miss a broadcast. “With IPTV the viewer can decide what to watch and when to watch it. So it makes entertainment personalised,” said UTStarcom’s Managing Director for South Asia, Vijay Yadav. Yadav and a team of experts from UTStarcom were in Colombo from October 16 to18, to raise awareness about UTStarcom’s services and technologies. The company explained that its technologies offer benefits to both consumers as well as telecommunications service providers.

For instance, IPTV technology can make a humble TV as good as a computer connected to the internet.
This is particularly useful for developing countries like Sri Lanka because it offers commercial and educational opportunities.

“For developing countries, this is an alternative to the personal computer, because it can bring information and educational material into your TV. So this is a powerful tool, because in developing countries more homes have TV’s than personal computers,” explained Mr Yadav.
