Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel recently partnered with Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) to provide mobile connectivity at sea for the first time in Sri Lanka.

The facility, which will greatly enhance travel for all sea passengers, crew, sailors and other seafarers, is available to all Mobitel outbound roamers.

This service, the first of its kind to be offered in Sri Lanka, can be used in over 100 ships with attractive call rates compared to the commonly used costly satellite calls made at sea.

Chairperson Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel Leisha De Silva Chandrasena commenting on the partnership with MCP said: "With the war coming to an end, we anticipate much activity in the maritime sector in the coming year. In that light, we felt that this partnership with MCP is of tremendous significance not only because it stretches Mobitel's reach across a new dimension but also because it would assist the development and growing maritime activities, thus benefitting our nation."

Chief Executive Officer MCP Pål Bjordal commenting on the above said: "In the modern world of wireless technology, people are accustomed to keeping in touch at all times. Passengers onboard ships are also eager to share their experiences through mobile phones, which is now made possible for subscribers in Sri Lanka through the roaming partnership between Mobitel and Maritime Communications Partner (MCP)."

Chief Executive Officer Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel Suren J. Amarasekera speaking on the same said: "Earlier this year, Mobitel partnered AeroMobile to offer in-flight mobile phone facility. Following the partnership with MCP, we now provide connectivity to our customers not only on land and air but also at sea. This raises the suggested meaning of 'network coverage' to a whole new level and Mobitel is proud be the pioneers of this facility in Sri Lanka."


Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, which is also the official sponsor of the National Cricket Team, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom. In January 2004, the company launched its fully-fledged 2.5G GSM network, which is EDGE/GPRS enabled and designed to operate on dual band.

In December 2007, the company launched its 3.5G HSPA network - the first Super 3.5G network in South Asia. Investments committed to date in the 3.5G/2.5G networks and service offering amounts to over US$ 300 mn. The company plans to increase its number of base stations to 2,000 by the end of 2009.

MCP is the global maritime cellular operator focused on providing cost-effective GSM communications solutions specially created to fulfill the requirements of the shipping industry. MCP enables cell phone coverage by installing and operating the ship-borne radio networks, linking the vessels with public networks via satellite.

MCP operates its mobile services via roaming agreements with cellular operators throughout the world and with mobile subscriptions specially designed for seafarers around the world. MCP is fully owned by Telenor ASA of Norway.
